Bloggers Quilt Festival!

Amy from Park City Girl is hosting a week long bloggers Quilt Festival and as I'm in the middle of so many projects I thought this would be a great idea to fill in some of my gaps in posting. The idea is to do a post on your favorite completed quilt project, and the story that goes with it. So the first quilt that came to mind was the one I made for (ds) Luke last year for his 30th birthday this year. Poor kid still hasn't received it, but that will change tomorrow.

A quick trip to the post office will solve that problem. I seem to get stuck coming up with things I can post back to Australia that don't cost an arm and a leg, (I failed miserably on this one). As it was a big birthday for him I wanted something that he could keep, and since it's been five years since I've seen him I wanted something that would last and remind him of how much I love him. So hence the quilt. I worked on each block as a single block ie: quilt as you go, and then joined all the blocks together. He has a love of Asian, (martial arts, and the arts in general) so I decided to go with the red, black and white. It's finally been given a name, "Red Centre". For those of you that are not from Australia, the Red Centre is also known as the Northern Territory, where you'll find Ayres Rock, also known as Uluru.

I know Luke will understand the name behind the quilt. If you'd like to see more of the natural beauty of the Australian outback, click here, and if you'd like to either join in on the festival or see the posts from other blogs then check out Amy's blog.

Happy Stitching.

Excellent! That is a lovely story Linda. I hope it isn't too much longer before you can see your ds again. It must be hard for both of you.

The quilt is just beautiful and Luke will really appreciate it when he gets it. I am still working on hand quilting my daughters high school graduation quilt which I made in 2004 but I am determined to have it finished by the time she graduates college.

Linda, Luke will treasure this forever! I'm so sad that you haven't seen him for 5 years - too bad you can't pack yourself up and deliver the quilt in person!

Beautiful quilt! I love the meaning behind then name you gave it, and the colors - it's perfect :) So glad we have spurred you to get it to the post office - I hope it makes it safely there!

It is so hard to find great presents that you can post. We are from Australia and currently living in the U.S for 3 years. My Mum recently sent my children some of their favourite chocolate. It wasn't a lot and cost over $20. Sometimes you just have to pay ridiculous postage costs to send something special.

Hey Linda! I've loved this quilt since you started showing us your progress last year and especially love the name you've given it - being a proud Aussie! My brother lives in "The Red Centre" in Alice Springs, so it's a part of Australia that is close to our hearts. I'm sure your son will love his special quilt and each time he's wrapped in it to keep warm, I'm sure it will be like a hug from you! Bear Hugs! KRIS

What a beautiful gift, your son will love and cherish it. I hope you get to see him soon. I'm in Australia and currently making a quilt for my baby nephew back in England that I haven't met yet so before I post it I will wrap myself up in it so he gets a big hug from his Aunty Nova when he opens it. xxx
