Machines?

Just a very quick post today. I've had a week of coughing, the dreaded bronchitis has hit and knocked me off my feet yet again, but I wanted to ask you all about overlockers/sergers. I wanted to get myself one but, I'm not at all familiar with the brands here in the US. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

Happy Stitching,
Linda.

I have a Singer Ultralock from the 80s. It doesn't convert to an overlock. But, it is a work horse! I've taught several students with newer models and theirs seem more difficult to thread than mine. It hasn't been difficult to find a serviceman for Singer.

On my wishlish: a Babylock that converts to an overlock.

I have a Husqvarna 936 and I love it. It is user friendly a touch screen to guide you and have the perfect stitch. Also it has cover stitch capabilities. It is a learning curve to learn the threading but the Husqvarna site has videos which help. Also an active Yahoo group which very knowledgeable give freely of tips, techniques etc. I hope this helps.

I hope your coughing and bronchitis settles soon. It is nasty.

I have an older Singer (plain Jane) from the early 80's. I hear they don't make them like that anymore, that Singer is now owned by another company and the product is not as good. I am going to enjoy reading the comments to your question, but I would love to get a new machine with all the bells and whistles, so I can learn to do some fun pretty things!

I have been told by numerous sources that Babylock is the way to go for Sergers. Good luck - I'm jealous - I'd love to get one but from what I've seen a cheap one isn't worth getting and I wouldn't use an expensive one enough to justify the cost.

Years ago I worked on a commerical serger. and there nothing that will beat it.
However I have 2. A New Home and the last one is a Babylock.
I like the stitch of the Babylock, but machine for machine. The New Home. Its over 12 years old and never been serviced but once.
BTW I wouldn't take nothing for my sergers.

Linda,
I have an old, old, old Babylock serger that was my mother in laws. It sews like a dream and is very easy to thread. I have only had it serviced once in the 20 years that I have had it.
Hope that you are feeling better soon.
Hugs, Barb

Oh no, you poor thing! Saying a prayer for you to feel better.

I have a Husqvarna 910 that has intimidated me for 3 years now. I've only used it in class. I worked for them and got it with a 40% discount on my very last day...thinking I might use it. Well, I don't make garments, so I don't know what I was thinking, lol! I do know that all Husq's come with classes though, and I believe Babylock does too. If you're going to be making a lot of clothing, then get one that does the coverstitch as well. The main thing is good dealer support - you really want classes. In class they'll actually have you making things, so it will benefit you.

I had to go look to see what my serger is. It's a Janome MyLock, I've had it for 6 years, and it works very well for me. This is the website for the MyLock: http://janome.com/index.cfm/Machines/Sergers/MyLock_634D
It has all kinds of capabilities & functions that I don't use (beading for example); it does rolled hems, overstitch, coverstitch, but I just use it for sewing clothes and when I feel like cheating while quilting.
:) Just my $0.02...

I recently worked in the sewing machine "biz", and yes, Babylock sergers are great! You could also look at Bernina's overlock machines - they are pricey, but oh so worth it.
