No I'm not talking about hanging your intimate apparel, but I did want to know how you go about hanging your small quilts. The ones that are less than 3 feet. Although I like the wire hangers, you can't always get them in every size. Plus I've been known to make up little quilts in an odd sizes, not one to follow a pattern they can end up a size that just isn't available in those little hangers. So how do you hang your mini's?
Happy Stitching.

I put plastic rings on the back and use a dowel stick or sm. curtain rod. I then add a pretty ribbon or cord and hang that from a small nail in the wall. You can also use a small shelf with a hole for a rod or hooked ends for the rod. If you check back in my posts from last year you can find some of my shelf quilts. Check around May of 2009.
I evenly space 2 safety pins on the back for the really little quilts (or 3 if the middle needs support). Mr. Creations puts the nails in the wall and no hanger, cord, or dowel shows and the safety pins are you "hanger". Otherwise a rod pocket for a dowel to slip through or the larger quilts.
Sew your hanging sleeve about 1" shorter on each end of the quilt. Slip a piece of thin, light weight wood through the sleeve (balsa will probably work fine.) Measure the wood so it sticks out about 1/2" longer on both ends of the sleeve but not should not go to the ends of the quilt. Peel the corner ends back..nail to the wall cover with the quilt on both sides. Quilt will hang straight and flat with nothing showing.
Works for big quilts too.
And its cheap!

Sew a sleeve onto the quilt back. I like to hang my quilts without showing any hardware or visible means of support. For the hanger, cut the desired length (less than the width of the quilt) from a wooden yardstick. Usually yardsticks are easy to find, inexpensive and have a hole in one end. After you've cut the desired length, drill a hole in the opposite end. Then hang the quilt from hand-sewing needles that have been nailed into the wall.
I am too lazy for a sleeve....I sew those plastic rings on each side of the back and us straight pins in the wall (leaves almost NO mark) and hang them from there.
Before you sew your binding on to the quilt, cut 2 three inch square of fabric for in half to form a triangle and place them in the upper corners then sew your binding on. When you are done with the binding you can them slipa small dowel or thin piece of work into these corners and hang the quilt up. A wooden yard stick works great on larger quilts.
Linda, I love the triangle method from Ami Simms - here's a link to her article on how to hang small quilts.

I, too do exactly as Linda does with the yardstick. That way nothing shows and the quilt shines. Lynne
What an interesting post - some great ideas here. I usually use a rod pocket and a piece of dowel. I should hang more of my mini's - they are a great decorating idea.
I use decorative curtain rods that have the clips. So easy to put up and then easy to change your quilts in and out too!
I've been known to just use sewing needles like you would a nail. You just tap them into the wall at an angle - they can't been seen and leave very tiny holes in the walls.
I have a friend who used clear push pins.
Linda, thanks for asking this, I've been reading all the great ideas.
I make a split sleeve on the back of every mini quilt and put a wooden skewer (50 in a pack at the dollar store) in the sleeve and then they can hang on one nail no matter what the size of the quilt.
