Lets Talk Sewing Tables

Thanks for all the feedback on the Janome 6600. It didn't take too much thinking about it to decide to buy one. I have one on order and hope to have it here within a week.
Now onto the table that sits under our machines.
I used to own one of these when I was living in Australia, and wouldn't waste the money again. I don't think there's sufficient room on or in them for a quilter. They are probably fine for the home sewer who doesn't use her machine as often as a quilter, but when it comes to quilting there isn't the space to spread out a large quilt on them.
This is pretty much what I have at the moment, an old worn out good for the dump type table. It's served me well over the years but I think it's time for an upgrade, especially as I have a husband who's more than capable of creating a good sturdy table for my new toy.
I'm wondering if a table with a sunken access for the machine to sit in is the way to go.
So here's your chance to voice your opinions, likes and dislikes about sewing tables, whether it's one you've bought or one that's been made especially for you and your machine. Even better how about sharing photo's on your blog of your tables that you use for quilting, I'd love to get ideas and I'm sure others would like to see what our blogging friends use.

Happy Stitching.
Linda

I inherited a Horn table from my mother-in-law. It has a set-in space for my machine, which is definitely nice. I've noticed a significant reduction in my neck and shoulder pain since I started using it. One thing that's annoying is that when I machine-quilt, there's still not enough room to my left to support the weight of the quilt I'm quilting. I still have to use my ironing board to prop up the quilt. The table's expandable front to back, which I guess is nice, but I'd really prefer that expandable space to be to the left of my machine. Ultimately, I'd love to have a big L-shaped sewing table, and I could sew in the crook of the L. That might give me enough space to the side. Oh well. Beggers can't be choosers. Good luck picking a set up that's right for you, and have fun playing with your new machine!!!

I have a SewEZI table...(check out www.SewEZI.com) It sits perpendicular to a 6 ft banquet table...when I sew the table is to my right...when I quilt I turn the SewEZI table 180 degrees and the banquet table is on my left. Or I can move the SewEZI table so that the banquet table is in front of me. It has the recessed shelf and comes with the acrylic insert specifically for your machine. I can also take it with me to retreat...which is why I can't send you a photo...cause it's sitting in the hallway waiting to be loaded into the car..lol

I have a Koala Quiltmate that I love. It does have the recess for your machine to drop in. When I was looking for a table, my hubby went with me to look at both the Koala and the Horn. He felt that the Koala was better made, so that was what I bought. Mine opens up in the back for a much larger area to quilt. But when I am just piecing, I can close the back and save space in my sewing area. There is also room on the side to keep a medium cutting mat for quick trimming. My sister in law has a table like the first one you showed, and it does not seem to be large enough for quilting. Hope you find what works for you.

Linda, I have a 50's kitchen table that I use for sewing - I love it - when I need to quilt a large quilt, I pull over another table on wheels to take up the slack on the quilt. BUT - a table with a drop for the sewing machine would be ideal. I do have the quilting table attachment for my machine, but it sure doesn't work like a recessed table would.

I would not have anything but a drop set-in space for my machines. There are many brands out on the market today. Both of mine are Horn tables and I love both of them. Each has a leaf that can be raised or lower depending on the article I am sewing. Also plenty storage space.

I have that brown square table in my livingroom with a lace table cloth on it! Mine is over 100 years old..so don't take it to the dump!

My sewing table is a kitchen table a guy made from 2x4's turned up on their side. It takes two teenagers to move it, but it for sure doesn't wobble. I also bought a clear extension for my Bernina...didn't think I needed a drop-in table when I like to re-purpose furniture too often.

I have an old Singer drop-in table in the garage...similar to your first picture that you can have if you'll just come and get it. It's in the garage collecting dust!

I have a Sylvia sewing table and I LOVE it. I use my machine every day and this table is great. I use one side to do the majority of my cutting even though it is not really as high as I might like for a cutting table. The back extends out to hold a really BiG quilt which is nice. I don't have the roomto open it up all the way though. I really love the fact that my machine can be recessed into the cabinet. I find it makes the actual quilting much easier to do, especially when FMQ!

I bought the Janome table with my 6600 about a year ago. I love having the machine sit down in it, but the table could be deeper for quilting or at least have an extension. I LOVE my 6600. I had a 3500 and like it a lot, but wanted the accufeed foot and am glad I got it!

Joint the Yahoo Janome group they can answer any questions and have lots of great ideas!

Large SewEZ table. Portable. Flat. just around $169. Incredible. And when you go to workshops, boom you have a flat surface toteable table.

I keep 2 fold-in-the-middle tables (@ Sam's Club)tucked under so I can quickly open them. I put the first between me and the wall I sit facing and the second on my left when I need swooping sweeping space for a quilt.
